The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is reviewing whether or not to adopt the new proposed rule, which says healthcare providers and insurance companies who discriminate against transgender people are violating the Affordable Care Act. But we only have until November 9 to act and help ensure that trans people are finally able to access the care that they need without barriers.
These rules recognize what medical professionals have already confirmed: that transition-related care is medically necessary and excluding it from insurance is discrimination. But even with the enormous progress we’ve made, we know that some insurance companies will still try to deny coverage for medically necessary treatments unless HHS makes it clear that that discrimination is prohibited.
